The carving and painting of wild animals is a new tradition in Oaxaca, Mexico. The crafting of 'alebrijes', as they are known in the region, began in the villages of Arrazola and San Martín Tilcajete about 50 years ago. Now an international craze, this amusing folkart has even been featured in the smithsonian. They are hand carved from copal wood and meticulously painted with brilliant color. Each is a piece of art, unique and full of character.
