Weaving has been a tradition among the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico for over 2,000 years. Today, the Zapotecs of Teotitlan de Valle continue this cottage industry, passing skills from generation to generation. These rugs are hand woven of 100% wool, both angora and merino wools are used. They are dyed with chemical analine dyes. Natural dyes are still used occasionally today, but the process is very laborious. Patterns may be contemporary to southwest in design in a variety of color combinations.
